If energy is formless, why do we use statues?

There is a fascinating interplay between formless energy and tangible representations, and one common question that arises is: If something, whether it be energy or a deity, is formless, can it truly be defined and accessed through physical forms such as statues?

In short, we use statues as conduits to connect with formless energy.

The Formless Nature of Energy and Consciousness

Energy, the essence that permeates the universe and constitutes our very being, is fundamentally formless. Like the ever-changing sky, energy does not possess a specific shape or form. Our consciousness has never been born and is never to die — and it’s part of this formless infinite energy.

As seekers, sometimes it is difficult to understand or fathom the energy we wish to harness. This poses the question: How can one tap into and connect with such formless energy?

To gain insight into using physical representations, let's consider the concept of Kali consciousness. While energy itself is formless, the mystics of ancient times recognized the need for seekers to have a tangible focal point to channel their intent.

By associating specific forms, mantras, and rituals with different aspects of energy, such as Kali consciousness, seekers were provided with a way to connect with and nurture specific energies.

Understanding the Role of Statues and Images

The use of statues and images within Tantra serves a profound purpose — while energy may not have a defined form, physical representations enable us to visualize and connect with the formless energy we want to tap into. Just as one glances out of a window to gauge the weather and prepare accordingly, statues provide a visual lens through which we can access and understand the archetype and energy we wish to embody.

Embracing the Limitations and Letting Go

While the use of statues and images facilitates initial connection and understanding, we have to recognize their limitations. At Leela, we emphasize the importance of transcending attachment and dependence on these physical forms. Just as one no longer needs a map once they are familiar with the path, seekers are encouraged to eventually connect with formless energy directly, without relying solely on external representations.

The Natural Progression of Spiritual Seekers

Embarking on a spiritual journey often entails starting with tangible images and forms, and gradually transitioning toward a deeper understanding of the formless energy they represent. Seeking help and guidance through physical representations is a natural and common practice. As you mature in your journey, you may find yourself relying less on statues and images, as you develop a more profound connection with the formless nature of energy.
